  1. nevr heard of it b4

  2. There is a small temple dedicated to Gayatri Mata in

    Chidambaram,

Tamilnadu. I had read about it, and during my recent visit to

Nataraja Swamy temple in Chidambaram, I searched for it and

    found

it. It is about a kilometre from Nataraja Temple western gate,

    near

Kanjithotti Bus stop. The temple is situated in the midst of

    small

houses of poor people and the road leading to it is also narrow.

    The

temple has an area about 3000 sq ft.

The gayatri Deity is of granite, about four to five feet in

    height,

and beautiful with five heads, ten hands, just as described in

    the

dhyana sloka," Mukta Vidruma...." except the gadha in one of the

hands. There is also a bronze idol for Utsavas as is the South

Indian practices. The three forms of Durga, Saraswati and Lakshmi

are on the other three sides as small shrines.

The temple is nearly four hundred years old, built by a Chola

    King

who was miraculously cured of his ailments by a brahman sage

    from

Andhra who used Gayatri japa to dispell the illness. The king

    asked

the sage what he could give in return. The sage asked him to

    build

    a

temple of Gayatri as one was not there anywhere. The cholas, the

enterprising builders, built one for the vedmata.

The temple must have seen trying times before being restored to

    the

present somewhat better condition. Some good people are looking

after, a priest from the Nataraja Temple comes there, but only

    at

11.00 AM and conducts the puja and locks the temple after about

    half

an hour. That's all. On Full moon day, Gayatri Homa is

    conducted.
