In clinical practice what is the logic behind examining the patient from the right side of the bed?

we all medical student practice it but like many of you dont know the exact meaning behind it so what is it?

  1. Most are right-hand dominant. Examination from the right side of the bed places the index finger of the dominant hand cephalad on a supine patient, more convenient for many parts of the exam.


  2. Most people are right handed.  So, examining from the left side allow you to give your patient some personal space while placing your right hand closer to the patient's body for examinations.
