Procaine, lidocaine, benzocaine and others are less regulated topical analgesics similar in TOPICAL action to cocaine, but with out the CNS effects (or high). Many people liken the effects of the epherdra plant to a cocaine "high", but even that is now regulated by most states and governments. Cocaine is a salt made from and extract of the coca plant, and isn't easily senthisized. Stick with a quad-latte from Starbucks.

Yes cocaine can be synthesized but the process is extremely long and impractical as opposed to just breaking down the matter of the coca plants in the south American region, such as Colombia, Peru, Bolivia.
