  1. It's a high school rookie who gets to hold a clipboard and study, study, study that playbook a lot during his freshman, red shirt year.  While he might practice, he can't play as long as he is red shirted, but he can play for 4 years after that year, not just the 3 it would be if he wasn't red shirted.  This helps him have a year to learn and gives the school 4 years of a better player.

  2. A player who is "red shirted" is a first year player who the team wants to keep for future use.

Due to NCAA rules, a person only has 4 full years of eligibility to play in the league.

Sometimes, you may get a valuable player just out of high school, but also have a senior at that position who is just as valuable.

So instead of wasting one year of eligibility sitting behind a senior on the depth chart, they can "red shirt" the player meaning they can practice and be on the team, but can't actually play until the next year.

This way they can learn the system for one year and still have 4 years of playing eligibility.

  3. It's just college.  A player who is on the team and can practice but can't play in actual games.  Usually it's so he can get better and develop until he starts to play.  So when he is a sophomore in college he's considered a redshirt freshman for football purposes.

  4. A red shirt means they can sit out this year to learn. But they can still play 4 full years. Say they are red shirted their freshman year, and don't play at all. They can still play 4 years after that. And they cannot be red shirted in back to back years.Only two years out of four. So if ther redshirted twice, they would be in college 6 years. (If they stayed for their senior year)

  5. a newbie to his position

  6. first time at a poistion

  7. it gives him a extra year of elligiblily.. 5th year sr

  8. A player who during their freshman season just practices and trains the whole time and doesn't play any games. It's only in college football. A player can only redshirt once for one year.

  9. yes its in college football. red shirt means hes a first timer at his position.
