Question:

In competitions and parades, why don't we see horses defecating while people are riding them?

I had some horseriding classes and that used to happen all the time.

So, why don't we ever see that in public events?

Horses are not such intelligent animals that they can be 'potty-trained'

  1. actually they can somewhat be trained.. it just depends on the horse.. my 2 equines will hold there potty in!

in the pasture they only go in a spot that they have gone before so when i'm riding or working them hard they won't go! they hold it in until they are back in the pasture then they go find the closest pile and go on top of that.. it's weird my gelding never did that but my stallion aslways did and now i put them together and now my gelding is acting just like my stud haha!

it seems they know when it's okay to potty because when we're working or training they hold it in, and i can tell because they get antsy and i can hear there stomach girgling and making noises lol they get kinda annoyed but they hold it in! and even in a trail ride they will hold it as long as they can then, and they still don't like going in random places but it they can't hold it then they go..=) i have such good boys =)

  2. Actually, THEY DO!!!

  3. Sometimes they will put bags on the horses - especially driving teams.  The bag catches the p**p as it falls.  The carriage rides in bigger cities have that a lot, where there is a bag behind the horses rear end.

Most parades I have seen have people walking behind or riding on scooters to collect the p**p after the horses pass by.

  4. I haven't seen very many parades but i have seen a horse defecating in one.

  5. Most likely they've done the deed in the trailer on the way to the show.

My cousin bought an expensive older paint stud, flew him to Michigan.  He was bucket trained.  We teased her about getting up twice in the night to drain the horse, although she was worried about him holding it that long.  It takes alot of training, but it can be done.

As for parades, I used to ride in them, yes my horse would poo along the way, always a pooper scooper following us.

  6. Horses p**p in parades all the time.

And as a correction, they are intelligent enough to be potty trained. Races horses are trained to pee at the sound of a whistle before races and for drug testing.

  7. I used to be in a marching band and participated in plenty of parades.

    Your observation is incorrect.

    Trust me.

  8. Actually horses can be trained not too "go" while they are working.

One of the owners at the riding school where I worked had a real thing about it.

Most people don't train them in this way - they have enough to do already.

  9. The do during parades, they have people walking beside or behind with something to scoop da p**p...

  10. Haven't you ever seen the guy who follows parades with a wheel barrow and shovel? And I've seen plenty of horses go in all sorts of competitions too. Keep observing.

  11. Not True

My horse stopped and pooped in the middle of a jumping class--very embarrassing

my other horse was just in a 4th of  july parade and pooped like CRAZY--he was quite scared of everything.

  12. What parade have you been watching? In our home town, where I am in charge of the horses in the parade, we hire a guy to follow behind with a four-wheeler, trailer and shovel to pick up the p**p because the city slickers are offended by a little recycled hay.

Well trained horses p**p while still walking. Some horses will stop and p**p but a trained one will keep going while dropping the meadow muffins.

In events such as shows or rodeo the horses are usually more involved, not just walking, and have their minds on what they are doing. However, at a relaxed walk if they gotta go, they go.
