In copying slides from one powerpoint to another, I lose the original backgroud. How can I prevent this?

When you copy and paste the slides, you should see a little clipboard icon below the last slide thumbnail that you pasted. Click on it and select Keep Source Formatting. This should work in any version of Powerpoint.
