  1. Well! In a test match if a team is losing a wicket almost before end of day. They'll regulate the chance of losing the wicket of a good batsmen for the day by making a bowler to play for that day. And the bowler will be the night watchman who saves the team from losing a proficient batsman.

  2. no its a batsmen who sits at a low number to support the tail and then they are promoted up the order

  3. 10th or 11th man I think  : )

  4. simple is a wkt goes at 87th over  and 1ly 3 overs remaing, so the batting team wil not allow a good rec batsman at tht time..so a tail ender will be allowed thn he is called Night Watch man....

ex.. Rahul and jaffer playing  till 87 overs for 1st wicket and if rahul geting out out 87 over the next batsman will be Sachin but thy will send Kumble this guy Kumble to spare those 3 overs of the day and kumble is Night watch man at this point

  5. When a recognised batsman loses their wicket near the end of the day's play, the batting team will usually send in a non-specialist batsman to see out the rest the overs.  Such a player is called as  a Night Watchman.

The idea is to protect the next recognised batsman for the next day's play, rather than run the risk of losing another batsman on that same evening.

Even though the recognised batsman is the better player, the conditions late in the day (fading light and creeping shadows) means their wicket is more at risk.

The team will want their better batsmen to make the most of the morning conditions, rather than at the end of day's play.

Normally it is one of the bowlers with a decent defensive technique. This is important as they will get a lot of testing deliveries at a very crucial stage of the day.

Usually, the nightwatchmen will receive some short-pitched bowling to rough them up and force them to play a false stroke.

The job is to keep their wicket intact rather than smash the boundaries for the runs.

Good judgement is very important - the night-watchman will have to leave the ball outside off-stump.

A good, solid defence goes without saying and the ability to take a few sharp blows from the opening paceman also helps.

Assuming they have survived the night before, the night-watchman has done their job.

  6. If a wicket falls late in the day instead of sending in one of your best batsmen who might get out you send in a weaker one to see the day out and keep your best for the next day..ie the nightwatchman

  7. During a test match, if a wickets falls close to the end of the day when light is failing, the team would send in a tail ender instead of a more recognized batsman.  This person is called the nightwatchman.

It is usually a tail ender because as light is failing you do not want to take the chance that your more experienced batsman would get out.

  8. Usually when a team innings begins just before the close of the stumps of the day and the team loses a wicket, batsman lower down in the order (normally the tailenders) are promoted in the batting order. He is supposed to keep strike till the close of play and as he guards the wicket he is called the nightwatchman. This night watchman's job is to maintain most of the strike until the close of play (remaining in overnight, hence the name) and so protect other, more capable batsmen from being out cheaply in what may be a period of tiredness or in poor light. The theory is that losing two top-order batsmen in quick succession would be worse than losing one top-order batsman and a tailender.

  9. its to save a team sending in a recognised batsman for what might only be a few balls and risk him getting out cheaply befoe the close of play on that day.  The thinking is that the tailender is dispensible - whereas someone that you rely on for runs scoring may get out cheaply (due to poorer light conditions etc).

  10. I always thought the nightwatchman was the chokidar who worked for a TATA company and cricket was his passion.
