  1. Keirin, means, in Japanese, "racing wheels" or simply "bicycle race", originated in Kokura City, Japan in November 1948 and has become very popular in Japan as a huge betting sport comparable to horse racing in other countries.

    Edit:  Keirin is a combination of two characters literally meaning "racing wheels : KEI = racing + RIN = wheels.
