Question:

In-door Pool Closed??

Hey lap swimmers! I'm trying to get back in to a routien and I went to my YMCA this morning to find out the pool was closed, due to scattered thunder showers in the area. It's an in-door pool!

I want to know, is it just my town that is crazy and over cautious, or does this happen else where?

  1. I have been a Lifeguard and Lifeguard Instructor for over 30 years.  The general rule is to close a swimming pool whenever Thunder and Lightning is in the area.  This is a safety measure to prevent electrocuting swimmers!  Lightning can travel through a building and enter an indoor pool, so it is applied to any swimming pool, not just outdoor ones.  Large concentrations of water seem to be an especially likely target for lightning strikes.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but no one is crazy...they are trying to prevent accident and injury, possibly death.

  2. lucky atleast u hav an indoor pool cuz when we hav practice in the after noon its almost always cancelled

  3. Nobody is crazy.

Whenever there is lightning within 30 miles of the YMCA I attend, both indoor pools are closed, the jacuzzi is closed.

It is a concept held by most all indoor pools that are managed correctly and safely.

  4. well they tell people not to take a shower if there is lightning outside so that makes some sense. but hopefully they did not close it on a forecast of thunderstorms, was there a thunderstorm with lightning occuring at the time?
