  1. Management and politics.

  2. In all honesty, the best sub-field is the one you have an interest in. It is a very intensive, high pressure profession and you have to like what you're doing.

Do the specifics of semi-conductors interest you? Do you really care about fermi levels and carrier mobility, and built in voltage?

Do you like communications? Are you completely facinated by wave propegation in various mediums and antenna patterns? Can you wade through the finer points of Maxwell's equations?

What about logic? Are you good at working with logic gates? Can you make a AND and NOT into a NAND or NOT and OR into a NOR? Can you do this with transistors?

Do you love analyzing circuits and fiddling with programs like PSpice? Are you particularly facinated by the transient response of LRC circuits?

It can all be very tedious you know.

I'm not sure if one typically has a higher salary than others. You will have to check around through employment ads. I know senior engineers can make over $100,000 a year.
