In football, does the Center play offense and defense?

The Center iis on the Offensive Line. He is in charge of hiking the football to the Quarterback. On the Defensive line, the man in center is known as a Nose Gaurd. But the Center is on Offense! :)

No.  Only offense.

Nope. The center is an offensive lineman. They don't play defense.

And don't give LuvDeezNutz thumbs down; because he's right. In the 3-4 defense, the nose tackle is sometimes referred to as a defensive center. It's just a term not used anymore.

The center is an offensive position, but the guy that plays center may also play defense and in fact in the early years of football all the offensive players played defense.  The guy playing QB on offense might, for instance, play the safety position on defense.

Defence does not have a "center" unless they have 3 linemen like in a 3-4. In this case the center is not called a center, he is the "Nose Tackle" So a defence does not have a center, but in some cases have a Nose Tackle "NT" for short.
