  1. I have been studying something related, where plasma is formed and conduited through a designed system.

    Magnetism is one way of containing the plasma. Opposite polarities.

    Another way is to charge the surface of a container which is metal, like stainless steel. It can be charged opposite to the plasma enough to create a barrier.

    Or you can ground out the container, which is metal and any plasma generated would be forced to terminate to the ground plane. If that's what you want, of course.


  2. There are various schemes that might work.  The most promising is magnetic containment.  Go wiki "tokamak".

  3. To date...it isn't.

    While at the Lawrence Livermore National Lab, my colleagues were working on a magnetic bottle.  That, theoretically, would keep any ionized particles inside the confines.  They called the bottle ying yang for the Chinese ying and yang.  Unfortunately, ying yang was way too unstable to hold the plasma, let alone hold it during a fusion process.

    Plasma is not necessary for fusion.  At LLNL, for example, we used LiD (lithium deuteride) beads as targets of a very very powerful laser gun.  The laser beam was split into many smaller beams, which then reconverged from all solid angles back onto the LiD bead.  The energy of these beams fused the deuteride (an isotope of hydrogen) to momentarily create fusion energy.

    But it was only momentary and never sustained.  We still cannot produce a sustained fusion reaction.  The problem is the same as for the universal solvent, which dissolves everything.  What do you keep it in?  Fusion vaporizes everything; what do you keep it in?
