  3. You are exactly right.  A second cousin would be the children of the first cousins relationship to each other.  In other words, your child and your first cousin's child would be 2nd cousins to each other.

It all goes back to the COMMON ancestor.  You and your first cousin are first cousins because you share the same grandparents.  Your first cousin's children is your first cousin once removed because the common ancestor you share is your grandparent but their great-grandparent.  They are one generation removed than you are from the common ancestor.  Your kids and their kids are 2nd cousins to each other because they are the same generational distance from the common ancestor, which is their great-grandparents.

    First cousins have common grandparents

    2nd cousins have common great-grandparents.

    3rd cousins have common great-great-grandparents.

Removed is when there is a generational difference between two peoples relationship to a common ancestor.  Use the chart that "itsjustme" recommended to help.  I know this is very confusing.

Contrary to what some people are ignorant enough to believe, "removed" has nothing to do with divorces.  A person is NOT your first cousin once removed because they divorced your first cousin.  I have seen that explanation a lot lately and it is wrong and stupid.

  4. Will this chart help you?.

  5. The removed bit is how you are separated by generations, so yes

First cousin has same grandparents, second cousins share same great grandparents.

Yeah, it always confuses me too.
