Question:

In general, if I "opt-out" with a company to prevent them from sharing my information, is it permanent?

...or do I have to contact them again every so often to remain opted-out?

If opting-out is NOT permanent, is there a law or statute that determines the minimum amount of time that it must last?

I've opted-out with all my credit card issuers, banks, loan holders, etc... but it's been a few years since I did so.

Thanks!

  1. If you opt out with each individual company, then I believe they are still controlled by the federal statute. It just takes a lot of effort to do it that way.

It is much easier to just do it centrally at my source. If you do it online, then you are covered for 5 years and will have to renew. If you decide to mail in the form, then it is permanent.
