In general how close do sharks come to shore?

I live in California but if it's possible I'd like a general answer. If you only get in the water up to your waist or chest is it still likely to get near one? If you wanted to be extra safe IN the water how close to shore would you want to be? ...surely they don't come right up to the sand?? Thanks.

  1. Most shark attacks occur in 3 ft. of water during feeding time which is dusk.  They are attracted by splashing.  Most occur when people swim alone.  To be safe swim with people, not near anyone fishing, during the day where there are lifeguards.

  2. They can go anywhere they can fit. Bull sharks have been found beached up on shore, how close they've gotten. Generally it varies on the type of shark. Smaller sharks tend to hang out around shore. Sharks that the general population are more afraid of (Great White, Tiger, etc.) tend to be in the deeper more open water areas.

    Hope this helps!

  3. anytime you go into the ocean you are liable to be injured by some marine animal, its their home. id be worried more about stingrays and jellies here in Ca. Also, there are more sharks here than people think, but, if you dont see them, does it mean that they are not out there ?
