Question:

In golf, what is meant by pin position/pin placement?

I'm new to the game and at a local golf course there was a sign that said "play to pin position number 2 today." There was a page in the scorecard that showed the course's pin position chart, but I could not understand it.

  1. Where it is located on the green. The golf club typically changes the placement of the hole every now and then. There are maybe 3-4 different spots per hole. They plug the others and only use one at a time.

  2. where the hole is on the green

  3. Pin positions are set areas on the green, and if you had GPS at that course it helps you to get exact yardages. that's all.

  4. where the hole iz on the green like the back the front or the middle

  5. Pin position is where the flag is on the green.  Yardage is measured to the middle of the green so that is a way to judge distance.

  6. During a tournament you have 4 rounds in usually four days.

For each round the hole is placed in a different position.

You have easy position or hard position (for ex just behind a bunker).

The pin position is the hole position on the green.

  7. With those charts, use them just like 4 square (if you ever played that when you were a kid).  You'll have 1,2,3,4 usually just quartered off, but sometimes they get a little fancy and have weird shapes... anyway, "use pin position 2" basically means the flag is somewhere in the #2 quadrant. This is good knowledge if you're faced with a blind shot to the green, or can't see the green from where you are. If i were you i wouldnt' take too much stock or worry in it right now. Since you just started i doubt you have  the skill to pick and choose where you hit it on the green. Just get it on there and sink the putts.... HOwever... if you ARE throwing darts out there, i hope this helps.

A little added bonus --- Lots of courses do things differently. You may have a sheet at one, but another may use the color system. This means that each flag can be one of 3 colors (sometimes more- again depends on the course) Red, white, or blue.   Red usually means the pin placement is "front", or closer than the middle of the green. White means "middle" and blue is "back" or further than the middle of the green.  Other courses use a small secondary flag on the pin's body. This little flag is up top for "back".  in the middle for "middle" and lower on the flag for "front".  It's not as reliable because sometimes people pick up the flag and accidently bump it into another position.

What do these other things mean?? well as with the pin sheet that you have, they'll let you know what to add/subtract from your shot. Remember, yardages 9 of 10 times are to the middle of the green. SO, if you have 150 yards left into the green and the pin is "back", then you should hit the ball to go at least 155 yards, as a rule. Why? because 150 is to the middle and with the pin in the back you have to go that much farther to get to the hole.

  8. The pin refers to the flagstick, showing where the hole is.  It means where the pin, or hole is on the green.  Front, middle, back.  That way you know where you want to hit your ball to.  If it is toward the back, you want to aim for the back of the green.

  9. The pin position is the area on the green where the hole will be located.  The pin may be on the front left of the green on one hole, and Back right on another hole.  Also some courses will use different color flags, (red, white, or Blue) to determine if the hole is in the front, middle, or back of the green.
