  1. Yes, it's basically the same thing.  Gymnasts get two scores; difficulty and execution.  The difficulty score is based on the point value of the 10 hardest skills in the routine.  The execution score starts from a 10.00 (with deductions taken for errors).  So if a gymnast has a difficulty score of 6.50, she basically "starts" from a 16.50.  


  2. Pretty much. The harder your difficulty the higher your start value. If you mess up on something and leave out a flip/twist/anything you might not get credit for that and the value may be lowered
