  1. It depends on the size of the track, but the majority of one-turn races are sprints - under one mile - and distance, two-turn, races one mile or over.

  2. totally depends on the track configuration...most larger tracks have a dirt track that is a mile to a mile and one eighth or a chute in the stretch that will allow them to run a mile and one eighth or sixteenth at two turns...otherwise longer races are held with the starting gate before the home stretch turn...some tracks are configured differently , for example...I believe they can run a mile at one turn at Belmont (Elmont NY), (I know its an eastern track)...Aqueduct (in NY) has two dirt tracks, one inner for winter use when the weather is bad so of course they are of different distances from finish line to finish line...overseas some tracks have big grass courses with a long straightaway that allows them to run distances up to 6 1/2 furlongs on a straightaway down the stretch...and some courses that have a long turn and a hairpin turn coming home, look like a rounded off triangle, Santa Anita in Arcadia Ca (los angeles area) has a grass course that starts off a hill and crosses over the dirt course (when run at 6 1/2 furlongs on turf)...so two turn and even in some cases one turn races depend on what track and what surface and distance you are running at...

  3. Most tracks are about 1 mile in length, so any race over 6 or 7 furlongs becomes a two turn race.
