  1. cd course and distance winner, c course winner, d distance winner, b brought down and bf is beaten favourite

  2. CD  has won on both this course and at this distance.

C means has run on this course before now.

D means has run this distance before now.

    B  ?

BF  beaten favorite last time out.

  3. hi loanshark, id just like to let you know there is a difference between getting the tongue over the bit and the tongue going up to the roof of the mouth.

when a horse gets his tongue over the bit it makes it a little bit more difficult to control him, eg. steering, speed, etc.

when a horse gets his tongue up to the roof of its mouth it messes with their breathing,it can cause them to 'flip their pallate"( this is a flap of skin at the opening of the windpipe)which obstructs the wind pipe. the jockey will hear a gurgle noise, and the horse dosent get enough oxygen into his lungs to compete at his best. the tongue tie keeps the tongue in a good position so the horse can breath properly and wont panic. only horses who 'flip' wear tongue ties.

  4. course and distance winner

    course winner

    distance winner

    blinkers

    beaten favorite

    cheers loanshark

  5. CD means Course and Distance winner (ie the horse has won at that course before and in a race over the same distance)

    C means course winner

D means the horse has won over the same distance

BF means the horse was a beaten favourite - ie they started favourite for a race but did not win.

Other symbols to look out for areL

t = the horse's tongue has been tied down (this is not cruel and actually quite common.  It stops a horse getting it's tongue over the bit and therefore being able to run out of control)

v = the horse is wearing a visor

bl = the horse is wearing blinkers

  6. Well done DavidG..the only one to actually answer the question correctly without extraneous comments. What is going on between Newmarketsalsa and horsemans pal? To me getting tongue over bit and stopping the tongue getting against the roof of the mouth is more or less the same thing!

The one not asked was V for visors (B and V with a little 1 beside it means wearing them for first time in public race)

If it goes to voting you get my point David.

  7. newmarketsalsa,i know you are a top contributor but get your facts right, tying a tounge down has nothing to do with stopping the horse getting the tounge over the bit and the jockey losing controll,it is all about stopping the animal from getting the tounge up against the roof of the mouth and impeding breathing.apart from that your answer is correct on the above question.
