  1. Jennifer C is correct. However, I have seen some tracks allow bets as low as $1 or even 50 cents on Trifecta and Superfecta bets.

  2. win, place, show (for a horse to finish 1st, 2nd, or 3rd) , exacta bets (for exact finish in order, two horses) trifecta (for exact finish in order, first three horses) superfecta (for exact order, first four horses) daily double (for the winners of two consecutive races) pick 3 (for the winners of three consecutive races) pick 4 (for the winners of four consecutive races) pick 5, 6, or 7 (for the winners of 5, 6, or 7 designated races) place pick all (for the first and second place horses on every race on the entire card)  for win place or show bets, the minimum bet is 2$ which the payoff prices are based on, some tracks have a minimum bet of 2 dollars for daily doubles, $1 minimum for daily triples, $2 minimum for pick 5,6, or 7 tickets, some tracks have a minimum $1 wager for superfectas but many tracks are going to .10 minimum wagers for superfectas (dont laugh Ive cashed some that paid as high as $1200.00 for a dime, and seen many that paid over 5000. you can sometimes avoid paying tax on some by buying them for .10 dozens of times rather than buying 1 dollar tickets and having each ticket come in under the tax minimum ) some tracks have .50 cent minimum trifecta bets (basically chicago tracks as I remember), some tracks take two horses and make them a 'match race' within a race and make one horse a slight favorite over the other for betting purposes...some tracks take races from another track and create pick 4s or pick 6s with those particular races...an example being the bal-cal which is a pick four consisting of two races on the Cal Expo (n. calif.)  card and two on the Balmoral (illinois) card (harness racing)...

  3. All is correct as stated except I've never seen 50 cent bets, usually dollar bets are for exotics (not win, place or show) and there is no $5000 maximum payout but there is a minimum $2.10 payout.  You do have to fill out a tax form for 300-1 odds wins.

  4. win. Bet on a horse that you think will win

Place. bet on a horse that you think will finish 1st of second

show. bet on a horse that will come 1st, 2nd, 3rd.

    wp. win/place bet

wps. a win place show bet. this allows you to bet on a horse that will finish anywhere in the first three

Exacta. the exacta bet requires you to pivk the first and second place horse in the order they will finish. you must get the correct horses in the correct for the bet to pay out. this can be straight boxed or wheeled.

Trifecta. same a exacta but its three horses.

superfecta. same as exacta and trifecta but four horses

Daily double. you  must select the winning horses form two consecutivie races. this bet can be straight or wheeled.

pick 3. to win a pick three bet you must select the winning horses in three consecutive race. it can be striight or wheeled.

pick 4. same as pick three but four horses.

pick 6. same as pick three and four but six races

Straight. you can choose to play the bet straight. this means you must select one horse for each finishing position the bet requires.

box. boxing a bet allows selected horses to finish in any order. a normal, un-boxed trifecta bet, for example would only pay out if horse 1 finished first, horse 2 finished second and horse 3 finished third as selected. the trifecta box however, will payout if horses 1,2 and 3 finish in th first three places in any order. however boxing the bet makes it more expensive as it is essentially placing a bet on every comboination of the selected horses. in the example above a trifecta bet has been placed on every possible combination of horses 1,2,and3 resulting in 6 bets.

wheel. boxing bet can become very expensive very quicky so an alternative is to wheel the bet. this allows you to chose multiple horses for each finishing place. you may decide when placing a trifecta bet that you are fairly certain that horse number one will finish in first place but are less sure of the second and and third positions. by wheeling the bet you can select horse 1 as first place and select multiple horses in secont and third positions. the more horses thar are selected , the more expensive the bet becomes. so you have horse number 1 in first place then add 2,3,4 for second place and 345 for third. this results in 7 combinations and as long as one of the combinations wins the bet will payout.

and i think the minium is 2 dollars for everything and the maxium is 5,000 dollars
