  1. Eddie D is spot on.

Is is short for Napoleon - the card game.  The best Hand was always declared with the phrase Napoleon.

  2. not always profitable.

  3. It comes from a card game called Napoleon. Each player is dealt 5 cards singly from a full pack of 52 and then declares, elder hand first, how many tricks he thinks he can make. "Nap" is a declaration to take all 5 tricks and therefore comes to mean a punter's best chance.

  4. it dosnt stand for anything...A British horse racing/betting term for the best bet advised by an expert on a given day (from the Napoleon – the most valuable French coin at the time the phrase was first used.)
