I know a motorcycle licence covers it all.

  1. There is a 50 cc to 200 cc class of license, and that covers all above mopeds but the highway scooters.  But its just as easy to get a 250 and get the whole thing at once, in 1 test.

The usual advice applies, 250 Kawasaki, used if you can find it, new if you must or if you intend to keep longer than 2-3 years or so. (They DO get HIGH gas mileage, 70mpg.)

Take the MSF basic rider course, and they will either give you the license (if you pass the course) or you will need to take the test (but have much better chance of passing on the first try). They teach you all you need to know, except the stuff that has to come from experience.

  2. Anything (scooter or cycle) that goes faster than 30 mph or has over 49 cc's needs a L or M class license.

Anything over 150 cc's requires a M class. Anything 150 or less requires an L class.

The written and riding tests are the same whether you test on a scooter or a motorcycle. There's no scooter-specific test or license.

  3. I am a cop in Illinois.  150cc and under....you need a "L" class endorsement.  151cc and over... you need a "M" class endorsement.
