Better

It is better today than ever before. Most people just don't think so because they are not really aware of the magnitude of past problems. We have it so good today compared to the past it is ridiculous. People say education is declining, even though we have the highest literacy rates in history. They say there is more violence than ever with war and terrorism,  that is just crazy compared to world war two or the hundred years war or whatever in the past. They say pollution is worse, except that it is actually safe to breather the air in Los Angeles or swim in the Hudson river today, neither was true in 1960 but that pollution has been cleaned up. Many whale species are back from the brink of extinction. And on and on. People today have no idea how bad problems were in the past and how far we have come in fixing them. All they can see is the problems that aren't fixed yet. People just seem to have a built in need to have worry and fear and they will find SOMETHING to fear no matter how safe they are.
