  1. Baba first is proud of Amir when he wins the Kite flying competition.

However, there are certain incidents which depict Amir changing in Baba's eyes:

    - when he tells him that his watch was stolen

    - when he continues to persue writing despite Baba wanting him to do something else

    - when he asks Baba to fix his marriage

  2. You have hit the nail on the head by asking the question that is central to the meaning of this story.  For the most part, novels have a form that is pretty dependable.  The central character (hero) has an inner conflict or weakness that he or she must face in order to fulfill destiny.  Typically, the climax, or most important event, takes place when the character faces this weakness and either overcomes (comedy) or is overcome by (tragedy).  At what point in the book does the main character (Amir) once and for all prove himself to be brave and able to stand up for himself?  I think you know the answer, but if not, you'll find it about 4/5's of the way through the pages.  Got it?  Yep, it's that exciting scene in Afghanistan when he frees the little boy.  I think you'll agree, that takes courage of a sort that one need never question again.

  3. He shows signs that he's starting to change when he asks Baba to talk to Soraya's father so they can marry. He has definitely changed by time he is in Afghanistan looking for Sohrab. At the orphanage and at Assef's he most certainly stands up for himself and Sohrab.
