  1. In construction, I knew a lad who had mistaken the word bank as back. We were discussing bunds and one guy said banks an the other lad that came over thought we said backs. It took us a little while to find out what he was on about until he explained what he heard the other day.

That's the only time I've heard of backs !!! in construction of bunds.

  2. Bunds are walls around features to prevent flooding from inside or out - I have met them mostly on chemical plants where storage tanks have to be surrounded by walls to contain the contents should the vessel fail

A friend who lives near a motorway also has his house shielded from the noise by a bund - a huge barrier of soil.

    What are backs?

  3. Unfortunately I can't be much more use than the previous answerer. A bund is indeed a long "hill" of earth. It is used to contain liquids (such as in land drainage usage, or to prevent spread of chemical spills) but can also be used for visual screening or for audio screening.

    I haven't heard of a back either.
