  1. I was going to ask if someone else didn't...  I own HDDVD and would think now that BluRay has 70% of the studio market share that they have in fact won this round.  I don't see how the HD camp can do anything.  They definitely don't have a response except that "we're shocked" - no "we have a deal in the works" or anything.  They cancelled their CES press conference because they have no response that will matter.  MS doesn't care about HDDVD or it would have been on XBox 360's long ago.  I'm sure I'll be buying a BR player at some point - there are movies they have I want and only more now in the works.  So, Universal and Paramount can continue exclusive HDDVD support FOR NOW but that wasn't the answer to this move by Warner to keep HDDVD alive.  I would say it's a just a matter of time, but it's over.

Oh ya - and I'm not buying a BluRay player until the price comes down to $150 for a good one and it wont be a Sony either just out of spite (Samsung is just fine with me).

  2. Not only that but Crutchfield Electronics is only selling Blu-Ray and several movie rental stores are gearing up for it exclusively. Only one unit on the market I've found can play both for a price tag of about $1,200. Blu-Ray will win. Check out the Crutchfield web site.

  3. Here i go......    Blu Ray vs HD DVD, in my professional opinion (this is my opinion so dont get all pissy on me HD DVD fans) i think ...    Blu Ray had a knock out puch on HD DVD a couple of days ago when Warner Brothers and New Line Cinema switched over to Blu Ray and left HD DVD hanging.. this is what it comes down to... forget about the "Beta ~ VHS wars" (the comparison that everyone use's) what it really should be compared to is "David and Goliath" .. let me explain. For one we have to 3 "S's" (Sony, Samsung, Sharp) not to mention panasonic, phillips, pioneer, and LG (no im not counting the dual Blu ray / HD DVD  LG player.) That is 7 of the biggest names in the industry who went with Blu Ray. With HD DVD you get the mighty Toshiba (and RCA if you even want to consider them)   **BUT** lets not forget Microsoft who supports the HD DVD with their Xbox 360 add on (microsoft could buy out all film companies to go to HD DVD if they wanted to keep in mind, then Blu Ray would be finished for good) but to be honest microsoft seems like it could care less so it doesnt help the HD DVD system at all. bottom line... HD DVD is just out numbered by companies who produce blu ray and also film companies who have gone with blu ray..

and      agb90spruce     you have to be kidding me if you think that Blu Ray or HD DVD do not look that good.. you must have bad eyes or not watch enough TV or movies to tell the difference

  4. The best if you stand at your system as long as everything

comes on a memorychips.Sony has 8 GB memorychips

already as common storage for 2-3 movies

No DVD of any kind has a long distant future.

They want you to make impossible to copy even your own movies you bought, and nothing can be done against, or at least I cant see more than strict copylaws go even more narrow.

  5. If Blu-Ray is a monopoly then so is DVD. No it is not a monopoly but is in competition with DVD, Movies on Demand, Starz, and internet movie downloading services like Vongo, Vudu, Apple TV and a new joint venture with LG and  Netflicks. If it is too expensive people will go elsewhere. Not to mention that there are already a bunch of Blu-Ray manufacturers already in competition for your $. So don't expect rising prices but falling ones. Especially now that the market is clearer some of the second tier manufacturers will start making them dropping prices even further. So yes I do expect Blu-Ray to take over . I've been predicting it for about a year but I was advising caution until about 6 months ago when I realized caution was only going to make the war last longer. We had to vote with our wallets and so it was the consumer that chose not the studios. All they did was follow the market. Hurray! We did it!

  6. It would be great to have just one system.  If it's blu ray, fine.

  7. I think it is.....it looks as if New Line which is partners or something with Warner will also stop making both formats and do Blu-Ray only sometime soon. There will only be Universal and Paramount left that are with HD DVD

  8. Most likely Blu-Ray will win now.  Which is VERY BAD for the consumers - they will charge us an arm and a leg for hardware and software, since it will be a monopoly on HD market.

  9. Take over from what?

Blu-ray and HD DVD are competing HD video formats. Both are competing with DVD as the main consumer disk format.

It now appears likely -- and this may become clearer in the next few weeks -- that Blu-ray will emerge as the preferred format for HD disks, but the jury is very much still out on whether or not HD disks will supplant DVD.

The problem is that only a minority of consumers can benefit from HD disks, and many of those who can benefit are not willing to pay the premium price required. Blu-ray may eventually take over, but only if prices come down to DVD levels and a majority of consumers buy HDTVs capable of displaying the benefits of HD disks over DVD. Otherwise Blu-ray will remain what it is now ... a niche format. The other question is whether some other delivery mechansim arrives which is less expensive, more convenient or otherwise more attractive than Blu-ray (e.g. some form of HD video on demand).

Personally I'm sticking with DVD until such time as I can buy HD disks at similar prices --- ~$10 or less as I now pay for previewed DVDs! I've tried HD disks and they aren't that much better.
