I have to write a paper on language ideologies and representation. We must select some from some source of media (magazine, dvd, etc), an example of language ideology(ies) and examine the accompanying representation. Or we can identify a representation of something and consider the associated or underlying language ideologies.

The problem is I dont really understand what a language ideology is or what is meant by representation. The only i know is that language ideologies are beliefs about languages (ie souther accent = dumb).

If i were to write my paper about the stand up of George Lopez, would I then be writing why what he's saying is funny to the audience. What would be some language ideologies in this case and whats the representation.

thanks

  1. Northern accent=rude and western=cow poke.

    It's spelled "southern".

  2. linguistic ideology is a systematic construct about how languages carry or are invested with certain moral, social, and political values, giving rise to implicit assumptions that people have about a language or about language in general.

In simple terms it means how a language reflect cultural ideas. For example, you will note that Latin languages has a difference for words in term of gender and this shows you their ideals about the separate role of gender.
