depends when i flew from London Heathrow to Newark when we where departing from London it was bus to plane from T4 then steps and in Newark Tunnel and then on way back it was Tunnel and then Tunnel again in London it depends really

The airport charges the airlines more to use the tunnels so some save money by using steps.
