  1. Any card remains in play is a permanent. This means creatures, artifacts, enchantments, lands, and planeswalkers are permanents. You play them and they stick around. Pretty simple.

More specifically, black permanents are permanents that have B in their mana cost. This means artifacts are rarely ever black permanents, and lands are not black permaments (you don't pay  B for them)

So when calculating Crowd of Cinder's power and toughness, count the number of creatures, enchantments, and planeswalkers you control that have B in their mana cost.

    *Bonus tip*

If you happen to have any black creature tokens, those are also black permanents, as they remain on the board until destroyed. Just make sure they are black; they will be colorless unless specifically stated. Also, and hybrid card (one that can be paid with Black or Red, for example) will be considered black, even if you didn't actually spend black mana on it.

  2. i will have to disagree with one statement regarding the mana.

because if you have a card that turns mana into creature tokens then they to become permanents.

creatures, spells, creature tokens, and the specifc colored artifact, are all permys.

  3. Black permanents are anything in your field of play that is black (meaning that it is paid for excusively by black mana) and a permanent (meaning that it does not leave the play more or less after it has been played).  Permanents are enchantments, summons/creatures, and artifacts.  If the card says power and toughness equals the NUMBER of black permanents, then count them up and that is the power and toughness.  I assume that's what it says.  It can't equal the black permanents themselves.

  4. every thing that stays on the field and is black is a black permanent except for mana

  5. Black creatures and enchantments, (Artifacts are also permanents but do not have a color unless given one by another spell or effect).

It would be equal to the number you control, basicly just count them.

So lets say you have a Zombie  with Unholy Strength on it, a Pestilence, and you have this creature as well, that is 4 black permanents.

With 4 permanents in play the creature would be a 4/4.

If the Zombie gets killed and the Unholy Strength goes to the graveyard with it. The creature becomes a 2/2.
