how do you subtract fractions when theres not a common denominater

  1. LCM rule...

    put the fraction to a common denominator...  


  2. You just need to make the denominator the same.

    For example:

    1/2 - 1/3

    2 x 3 = 6

    6 is the least common denominator.

    1/2 = 3/6

    1/3 = 2/6

    3/6 - 2/6 = 1/6.

  3. there is always a common denominator... if you have to, multiply the two denominators together, that will always be a common denominator...however it may not be the least one, its a little guess and check too
