What does it mean in an equation when a number has an x next to it? Like 3x+4. What does that mean?

  1. If the equation was set to equal a number for example 10 then

    3x+4=10

    subtract 4 from each side

    3x=6

    3 times what is 6

    divide each side by 3

    x=2


  2. x is the variable that you have to find.

  3. x is a variable and what you're trying to find most of the time. e.g. 3x+1=10  x is 3 because 3 times 3 is 9 plus 1 is 10 hope that helps I wasn't really sure what you were asking.
