  1. In basic equations, there are two major types of values - variables and constants.  A variable is something you change to try to solve the equation.  A constant can not be changed.  If you have the equation X + 2 = 3, your variable is X and your constants are 2 and 3.  Since you know what they are, then can't be changed and are constant.
