  1. It means Walks and Hits per innings pitched. SO every walk you let up and hit you let up per every inning you pitch.

    So walks plus hits. Divided by innings pitched. Example

    Lets say someone walked 32 and let up 67 hits. In about 74 innings pitched. He would have a 1.338 WHIP. So he almost lets about 1 and a half batters per every inning he pitches.
