  1. There are friction and "spacer" plates, and maybe a flywheel and pressure plate. A car typically has one friction plate that's held between the flywheel and the pressure plate.

    In a bike, because of the small diameters required for clearance and because of high rpm, smaller plates are required. Because smaller plates can't transmit as much torque as larger plates, you need more of them.

    They usually run "wet," that is, in the crankcase oil, which is why you don't use "car" oil in a wet-plate-clutch bike -- "car" oils typically have "friction-reducers," and these will make your wet clutch slip.
