I mean, come on. There's no way it's that big in real life.

  1. Its because it looks so much "cooler" when its closer. Just a movie trick.

  2. It's more dramatic that way. Don't expect movies to be a reflection of real life, especially regarding matters of science. They NEVER get the science right.

  3. So that it's much more attractive and so it will be much more noticeable to the audience. I think it is always shown big to get the best effect out of it.

  4. because if it wasn't ETs shadow wouldn't be as dramatic.

  5. There is a technique called 'compositing' which allows you to seemlessly mix one image with another.  For the reasons stated by others - namely Drama - it looks cool so directors often choose to include it in a shot. But they have to fake it.

On a movie set, the average lense is a wide angle lense so you can take in a lot of scenery or action. But if you ever see the moon in a wide angle shot, it looks like one really bright DOT; not the way you precieve the moon to appear at all. So they composite in a shot of the moon with a telescopic lens and the result is generally more pleasing to the eye.

  6. It creates more drama that way.
