In my 5.1 surround sound system, is it OK to have the center, left and right speakers 3-4 feet above the TV?

The rear speaker would be a regular height, but all the front speakers would be about 8 high (3.5 feet above the TV). Would this sould weird?

  1. In addition to what dan said (thanks for the soundboard help dan too)... if they are above the tv, be sure to adjust the distances appropriately so it can adjust for the added sound delay.

  2. ideally you would want your front speakers and center channel at ear level from where you're sitting.  Some front speakers have adjustable tweeters that allow you to "point" them in a certain direction (my in-wall speakers do).  It probably wouldn't sound too badly, but make sure you adjust the level of your rears so they don't overpower the fronts since it sounds like your rears will be closer to ear level.

  3. It definitely would not be ideal - you really want to have the speakers at "ear height" if possible.  If you must have them that high, try to aim the speakers downward towards the listeners.
