In my book it said a man got killed with a blackjack. What is that?

It does not mean the card game. I think it's something that can be used as a weapon.

It's also known as a sap or cosh. It's often a small weight in a fabric or other flexible container that is swung at the head, If the container is flexible, this allows the weight to get something like a whip-crack effect as it strikes the skull with occasional lethal result.

The really professionally made ones are made with a leather case which is wrapped around a piece of metal. Unprofessionally made ones can be made with: sand in a rubber hose wrapped in black tape, loose change in a sock, metal pellets in a sock and wound tightly, etc.

These weapons were favored by cops and bad guys alike because they don't leave a mark (unless used repeatedly at 1 time on the same part of the body) and because they were easy to conceal.

It's kind of like a billy club, less like a nightstick...  It's flexible, and it's main purpose seems to be in poppin people over the head with an almost guaranteed KO.  It has some kind of weight in it, and I believe that it could very easily cause a skull fracture and all of the complications involved in that.  Also a hit near the temple could very well kill somebody.  Out of curiousity, was the blackjack wielder in your book part of the mob?  The blackjack seemed to be very popular in the 1920's and 1930's with orgnized crime.
