Hi I have 38'' Philips HDTV/LCD with 768P & my Playstation 3 with (40gb). I am also using (Philips HDMI-To-HDMI) cable to connect my HDTV & PS3 together for better picture & sound. I set my Playstation 3 to 720P instead of 1080i because, 720P is better. When I play "Planet Earth" on Blu-ray format, well.......I have a good eye & I am not like "wow this is amazing". Is it because I do not have 1080P resolution?

In my doing something wrong?

  1. Realistically, 1080i and 720p are identical. The progressive picture with the 720p resolution is about the same as interlacing at 1080i.  The difference between 1080p and 720p really isn't significant until you get above 50", so if your picture isn't amazing you, it might have to do with the way you calibrated it. Adjust your TV's picture settings.

Fact is, you're not going to be blown away if your TV itself doesn't support 1080p. When you watch standard definition DVDs vs Blu-Ray movies on a set that supports 1080p, the differences are incredible. The HDMI cable will do some upscaling for you, but it's no substitute for a true 1080p picture.

  2. do you have a blue ray player?

  3. Is your Planet Earth a Blue Ray DVD? If you have the LCD connected with the PS3 thru the HDMI cable you have it conected as HD as you can get it. True, 720P is not as good as 1080P, the picture should still look pretty d**n good. you may want to check the menu on the TV, make sure everything is set for HD picture. If it still doesnt work good i would test another Blue Ray DVD. I have heard that a normal DVD looks very very bad on the blue ray players, maybe someone slipped a normal DVD in the Planet Earth set.  Hope this helped.

  4. It should be just right if you had calibrated your tv and aren't sitting to close

  5. Does this happen with other discs or just Planet Earth?  There isn't a huge wow factor difference from 1080i and p.  Double check your settings. Try using 1080i, see how this looks,  depending on the TV native resolution, it may work better.  Let your eyes be the judge. Also, make sure you are at the correct viewing distance.  I believe for a 38in TV you should be 6-7 feet away.  You should see a significant difference between a dvd and blu.
