are between 2 distinctive looking pieces of darker wood and they are about 2 feet apart each. Any idea why they are there in the floorboards?

  1. It sounds like they are actually electrical outlets under there.

  2. Are they between rooms? Usually it's door hardware htat would have kept them closed. if the doorway was made wider or the wall changed at some time the original the doors were scrapped (usually french doors). This is usually the case with older homes. The darker boards are probably just that, darker boards.

  3. Have you tried lifting them up? Maybe your house was built during prohibition and moonshiners kept booze under the floorboards. Seriously. There could be fine jewelry under there. Or a trap door, if it's on your ground floor. That would be so cool. Or maybe someone who actually knows a thing or two about hardwood flooring will have given you a real answer by now.

  4. According to most movies and TV shows I've seen, there should be something fantastic hidden underneath.
