Here's the problem ... I've been exploring career possibilities and recently came across one through a mutual friend. Well I discussed things with this mutual friend and we emailed back and forth for a few days. In one email he flat out told me that 'basically by knowing me you would have the job'. Well we talked Sunday evening and he told me he would talk to his boss and have his boss contact me to discuss employment. Well Monday and Tuesday rolled around and I've yet to get the phone call ...I'm not the most patient person. This mutual friend, has a copy of my resume and said he would be sure his boss received and got in touch with me. I've been tossing around the idea of emailing my friends boss (who's also the company VP) and just going straight to the source. So my question is

a)whether or not I should email the VP

b)if yes, what would be the best format for this email (I've already started one but I want some feedback and thoughts before I send one)

c) should I include another copy of my resume as I have no idea whether or not he's actually received it yet?

  1. I'd handle this as if your "friend" weren't involved. Send your resume and cover letter to the boss (no email) indicating the job for which you are applying - there is an opening, right???

This "friend" may not be as tight w/the boss as he says/thinks he is.

  2. I'm work in a industry where networking is BIG and I gotta tell you, I don't think it's a good idea you email the guy directly.  As the other responder stated, he may have already gotten it and then getting it again from you can look weird. Here some things to consider - is therea  legitmate job opening? Is this VP information openly avialable? He may wonder how you got it. Those guys are pretty busy and I know your anxious to get a job, but it may be nothing personal. Just give it time.. This VERY SAME THING happened to me about a month ago. I passed along my resume to a friend who said they'd forward it to HR Director and didn't here a thing for over a week. I was SO pissed and totally convinced myself that she must have sabotaged me b/c she knew I was perfect for the job... Turns out, the Director was just crazy busy and couldn't get a decent time to schedule me in with the Hiring Manager, who was equally as busy. Ended up do in the interview that same week... Mind can play tricks on you when you're waiting...I say contact you're friend and see what's up. I mean, is there any reason why you shouldn't trust this person? If they're well ranked, I'd say you're good and best to leave it alone. You may make you look bad that this guy is trying to recommend you and you sort of go around him to try and get the job (again, I base this off my own experience where relationship/networking is Big.)  All the best!

  3. Absolutely not.  If you have to ask questions, you ask your friend's big shot friend.  It's more than possible that his boss told him to take a hike.
