In need of desperate help?

Ever since I heard the statement “life would be boring if everyone was the same” I am constantly disturbed by the thought that I am trying to be what I am not. I have tried to rationalize this statement in many ways in my head saying that everything is relative or we change our behavior based on the experiences we have but none of the above rationalization have helped me overcome this obsessive thought. My psychiatrist says its OCD and if I ignore it continue on with my life the thought will eventually disappear but I am having difficultly doing this because it seems such a reasonable thought?

  1. know theyself -- the matrix

it's a long road to knowing oneself.  I don't think there's an end to the process, personally.

I find talking about it is the best therapy.. whic you're doing here now so good for you!  I recommend joining an online support group.. do a good search.  my favorite is http://dailystrength.org/c/Depression/su...

    hope that helps!

  2. Keep your mind occupied.

  3. Well maybe the best thing for you to do is sit down with a piece of paper and write down what describes you.  and as you write these items down think about weather they are influenced upon you by others.  I think you will realize as you write these down that a lot of things you enjoy doing is because you enjoy doing it and not someone else.

The statement "life would be boring if everyone weas the same" is true, and each and everyone of us is unique, becasue that's the only way we as humans can be.

  4. It is our survival instinct. The first time a man ate bad meat and got sick other smart people automatically stopped eating that type of meat. At the same time some people did not like the smart people so they ate it anyway even though it made them sick just to be different. Then the third group of people didn't think about it one way or another they just did what the people they liked and wanted to be like the most did.

That is still how it works all these centuries later. Some get an education learn about facts, truth, honor, religion, science and end up getting good jobs and making a difference. One group is too dumb, lazy or finds it easier not to work hard and do the opposite. Then especially in public schools you have the followers.

Which are you? Make your choices wisely and remember what I said or you will follow the wrong people for the wrong reason and like the cave man end up extinct.

  5. You would know if you were trying to be something you are not. Everyone occasionally gets ideas from other people be it style, or even the jokes you tell.

That doesn't mean you don't add your own opinions into the mix, and that's all that really matters...is that you are who you *think* you are, because really....that's the only person you can be.

There's nothing wrong with you. You just have yet to "find yourself"

Bah...it all makes sense in my head....so I hope you understand.

  6. you are who you are...it's hard to ignore obsessive thoughts but maybe if you keep yourself busy with something else the thoughts will eventually go away...i wish I could say something which would make more sense and help you...i'm sry

  7. Are you saying that because of that statement you strive to be something your not.. “life would be boring if everyone was the same” is more of an generalization instead of an individual thing. Just do things that you like, dress how you want, and always keep in touch with yourself.

  8. Keep your body occupied. You need to "get out of your head"

I d/k what you like to do, but some ways are gardening, exercising, things that are physical and difficult enough you need to concentrate on the activity not your thoughts. Tire yourself out so you can't think lol!

  9. First of all, realize that we are all different. We will never be the same unless we are all clones and even then each clone would be subject to different lifestyles/environments throughout the world. Just be yourself and forget about trying to change your self image.
