  1. Read the book "Ferrets for Dummies". You can go to any Barnes and Noble, pick it up and sit and read it without paying for it...or buy it if you like it.

Ferrets need good food, good vet care, often require surgeries as they get older, live till they are 10, and will poo and pee on your carpet/floors. Yes some go in litterboxes, especially in their cages, but be prepared for ruined carpet. Even with boxes, some people can't get them to go 100% and if you have cheap carpet, it gets ruined quickly.

You can't hit or flick a ferret to punish them, you have to scruff them like a mother cat does to her kitten, with your hand. Then say "no" and hold them there for a little bit. Hitting reinforces their biting, and makes them fear you, another reason for biting - real bites. Play bites are different, and natural.

Make sure your house is ferret proofed. Underneath the cupboards your ferret can get in if there is a gap. Feel carefully, it's hard to find sometimes. Some people have had ferrets get their heads stuck and die after trying to get in there. YOu can cram wooden shims or 1x1's in there to make them stop going in there. Don't let him get behind/under/inside your stove, fridge, dishwasher, etc. It's best not to let them get in the kitchen at all.

They can get into couches easily and not want to come out. They can get hurt by the springs. And hurt by getting inside rocking chairs and lazy-boys or other recliners. Make sure when he's out no one uses those. Or keep him in a room meant for him.

Just be careful and treat him like a newborn baby, watch him all the time, and you'll be fine. They always find something to get into. Don't let them eat anything styrofoam or rubber as it will block and kill them. Peanuts made of starch can be bought at packing stores, called biodegradable, that he can play in.

Ferrets for Dummies is a good book, just read it and your question will be answered!

  2. get them lotssssss of toys so that while you're not there, and they want to play, they can :)

  3. You need lots of stuff!!! I would get a cage first so you can set it up before the ferret comes home with you, trust me you will thank me later! lol Get treats, litter and litter boxes, toys (or make some, they play with lots of random things, like shoes), a bed/hamock, food, carrier, bedding, etc. Make sure you also have a vet!!

They need lots of room to play! Make sure you baby proof the house only better they get into everything!

If you are only getting one give him extra attention and play with him. If you get more than one they will not need as much attention.

    Good luck!

  4. go to hugawoozel.com! it's an amazing site that will tell about how to care for them and if they are right for you!

you really need to make sure you know what you are getting into, they live up to 10 years and are A LOT of work.

  5. First thing is that ferrets are a lot more that most people expect. They require a lot of attention. Search on google about it before you get in too deep.
