In nj, how long does it take for hay to become unuseable?

i have a bow and i want to use a bail of hay as a target, if i leave it outside, in all weather, in nj how long will it be before it is no longer abe to be used as a target? i will cover it in the winter

Quite a long time, although the effects of rain and drying out will eventually cause dry rot.  I don't think you need be concerned.
