  1. Three of my 4 children are autistic. My 17 year old has Aspergers and has watched her siblings for short periods of time for the past couple of years. My 14 year old on the other hand is quite effected and I would never dream of leaving him in charge or even leaving him alone, not even for a 10 minute errand.

You know what your 16 year old is capable of-If you think he can handle it, I'd try out some really short time periods at first and make sure he has a phone number where he can immediately contact you.

  2. That would be beyond insane.

  3. My son with high functioning autism stays with his 12 year old sister and 5 year old brother while we work. I have been mostly working from home, but I plan to get a new job soon and they will be home together after school.

It's fine. The 12 and 8 year old are basically old enough to be latch-key kids anyway and if the autistic boy likes to read and play on the computer like mine does, he should cause no trouble.

Don't worry about it. It's good for autistic kids to be given some responsibilities.

  4. It doesn't matter what state, how autistic is "autistic"?  Does he have Asperger's or a higher functioning autism?  In which case, yes, he probably could watch his siblings.

Is he responsible?  How does he react in case of an emergency? Would his siblings listen to him as an authority figure?

If it's a more severe type of autism, then I would say no.

You know your child better than anyone here on Yahoo! Answers.

  5. No.  That would fall under the child neglect/child endangerment heading with CPS

  6. that would be a really dumb thing to do unless he was very mildly autistic
