In orchestral concerts why does the soloist always sit to the left of the conductor?

  1. Because it's traditional... but it also places then next to the First Chair First Violinist and, usually, the Concertmaster, so it puts the soloist next to the best players in the orchestra and makes it easier for the Conductor
