I had a pair of barn swallows nest in the alcove above my front porch where I could watch their babies grow all summer. They have now left, and I was wondering if in order for them to nest in the same spot next year would I have to knock down their nest.

  1. NO!  Swallows are one of a few species that will reuse nests from year to year.  They may reuse it again next year if it survives the winter or build a new one close to it....or rebuild in the same spot if the old nest falls down.

  2. Absolutely not!  In fact, it is illegal to disturb a barn swallows nest.  Mission San Juan Capiatrano lost its fabled swallows, probably forever, by removing the old nests.  Barn swallows are nice to have around because they can eat their weight in mosquitos every day.
