Okay my school year begins in about 20 days, and so I have to the drivers ed course. But since my birthday comes up in 2 months so I'll be turning 16 so does that mean that I'll have to still take the drivers Ed course, or can I just wait until I turn 16 to go to the DMV and apply for my license?

And by the way I live in Illinois.

  1. no you dont. you will have to take a written and pass a driving test. Drivers ed. will give you a discount on insuranc tho. i did it, easy as pie. and just as cheap

  2. well im pretty sure that u gotta do the course at the dmv anyways because im 16 and i didnt tke the course at school. u see the school one isnt really recommended but once u get to the dmv they make u take it in order for u to get the license.by the way i  live in virginia.

  3. You can just go and take the test.. but it would be smarter to take the course first, score higher on the test and get a break on your car insurance....

  4. Most states require anyone under the age of 18 to take a Drivers Ed course. Most are mandatory. Over 21, in Virginia, you can just study, and take the DMV test. I think if you're 18 to 21 in Virginia, you still need a course. I think they figure that if you made it to 21, you probably already have some sort of life experience, if not driving experience, to be able to pass the written and driving parts ok.
