In order to save gas, how about everyone work 4 ten hour days???

you would have to ask your employer about this.  i know alot of people that work 4 10 hour days.  if you prove the work would get done.  and try to work out problems they bring up, you might be able to do it.  would also save if everyone carpooled with at least one other person from work.

Or you could carpool, or take public transit and save that much more without working yourself to death and missing out on that valuable family time!

Not a bad idea plus you will have extra day/time for the family (but don't drive on that day or it just beats the purpose).

It's already been done in some countries actually where school days are only from Monday to Thursday but with longer hours.

But there can be problems since many already work 12 hours a day, or those who have 2 jobs. I guess it depends on the people and the work they do.
