In order to study abroad, do you need permission from BOTH of your parents?

If only one parent gives you permission to travel abroad, is that enough? Or do you need both of their permission?

If you decide to go anyways with the consent of only one parent, can the other parent file some kind of lawsuit?

  1. no i only need one parent to tell me wat to do

  2. It all depends whether or not your parents have the same opinion on some things. Lets be honest though, there must be some reason for a parent not to accept it. If it is because this parent wants to control you in his/her surrounding, I find the opinion unacceptable. Be sure you know what you're doing, especially when it comes to language knowledge.

  3. No but you do need permission from the broad.

  4. In some cases you might need proof that your other parent cant give permission. And yes, if the other parent has partial custody, they can file a lawsuit.

  5. If you live with both of your parents wouldn't they both agree to it vs. seperately?

Too, will you be able to handle the responsiblity of studying abroad and behaving properly in another country and culture?

  6. Hello,

Legally, you need permission from both your parents to study abroad.  Any reputable exchange organization will not let you go for just the reason cited.

The only legal alternatives are 1) if one parent is deceased and the remaining parent can show the death certificate and 2) if the non-custodial parent has disappeared and your parent and you can somehow verify the lack of contact.

I'm just giving you the facts.  I have had to help several students with just this problem.  I am a sending coordinator for AFS at www.usa.afs.org.

    I hope this helps.

  7. To study abroad it is not necessary to take permission from both of your parents, permission from one is enough.

But it is always advisable to take permission from both of them because of the following reasons:-

1.First of all they are your parents.. they have given you birth and made you capable of study in abroad.

2.Second thing is that they are more experienced than you so their advice/suggestions can help you a lot ( you know ... a person should always be open for suggestions like that... )

3.And Finally last thing is that as they are your parents ... they are closest to you of everybody in this world so if something happen to you in abroad or if at anytime you will feel like you need help then they are always there for you to help.

I hope  I have convinced you to ask from both of your parents and you will also convince them to allow you to study abroad.

    All the best!!!!

  8. If your parents are together then one should be okay. However if they aren't then it really depends on custody. If one parent has full custody then you only need that specific parent's permission. If it's joint custody you may need both parents to agree (I know you need both to agree for one parent to take you out of the country for any reason but it might be differnt for you to go by yourself.) However if one parent has "final say in decision matters" then that would be the parent you need to sign any documents.

I don't believe either parent can file a lawsuit though.
