  1. The laws vary state to state. However, usually the answer is no.

However, you will probably have to pay to take some sort of week long (or more) course of study in the Insurance that you'd like to become licensed in, and they do cost money.

So if you are sponsored by a company usually the course and the test are paid for by the company sponsoring you.

You should check your local state website to see what the requirements are.

    I hope that this helps.

  2. It depends on what state you are in, and which test.

If you go to your state insurance department website, the info should be there.

  3. Are you talking about a series 7 or 62? Yes. You have to be sponsered to take series exams. Try working with Ameriprise, if they like you, they will sponsor you.

  4. I'm not sure you two are talking about the same thing. If you are talking about the test to be able to sell insurance such as car, health or life, you do not need to be sponsored. And I am not even sure that you need to be sponsored to take a series 7 or 62 either.

However, I am certain that any of these tests will require you to take a course and study for a certain amount of time. You cannot just go in and take the test. For instance, in California you are required to take a course and study for 52 hours if you are taking the Life-only and Accident Insurance test.

That said, many insurance companies have their own courses and exam prep and many of them do this for a minimal charge that is less than doing it on your own. For instance, I am an independent Aflac agent and they provided me a free online course. So, if you are thinking about a certain company, definitely check with them first.
